Never die of a heart attack?

How would you like to reduce your risk of dying because of a heart attack by 80% or more? And how would you like to do it with one of the most inexpensive nutrients around? I know, I was skeptical too. But two studies show that you really can avoid dying from a heart attack just by taking the sunshine vitamin.

I’ve told you a lot about the marvelous health benefits of vitamin D. It prevents the flu, Alzheimer’s, bone loss, and even cancer. But the first of these studies shows that this powerful vitamin does indeed prevent heart attacks.

Amazingly, the American Heart Association published this study in the journal Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology. So it carries significant weight. In this study, researchers from the University of Kansas discovered that low levels of vitamin D cause a markedly higher risk of dying from a heart attack.

These researchers looked at more than 10,000 people from Denmark. But they didn’t stop there. They also looked at 35 studies. They expected to find a direct relationship between vitamin D and heart attack risk. But, according to the study’s author, Dr. James Vacek, “We were surprised at how strong it was... it was so much more profound than we expected.”

Here’s what they discovered. Optimal levels of vitamin D (over 50 nanomol/liter) will lower your risk of early death from a heart attack by more than 80%. What’s more, as your levels decline, your risk of having a life-ending heart attack goes up proportionally. In fact, those with the lowest levels of vitamin D had a 64% higher risk of heart attack and a 57% higher risk of early death.

In their conclusion, the researchers said, “We can ascertain that there is a strong statistical correlation between a low level of vitamin D and high risk of heart disease and early death. The explanation may be that a low level of vitamin D directly leads to heart disease and death.”

I love that perhaps the world’s best heart attack preventive is so inexpensive (less than $10 for a one-month supply). And I think everyone should be taking vitamin D daily. It might completely erase your risk of dying from a heart attack. But I thought the researchers gave a weak “explanation.” They didn’t really explain why vitamin D can prevent a death by heart attack. They just made the connection.

Naturally, this peaked my interest. I wanted to know how it could prevent a heart attack. After all, don’t heart attacks occur because of a blockage?
