If you're not taking this for your memory, your risk for dementia increases by 181%

If you don't suffer from dementia, yet you've noticed your memory slipping a little more than usual, it's possible you suffer from mild cognitive impairment or MCI. MCI is an intermediate stage between normal age-related memory loss and the more serious decline of dementia. While MCI typically doesn't interfere with your day-to-day activities, it's still very frustrating. And it could increase your risk for full-blown dementia. Fortunately, a new study shows how a simple herb can help reverse this problem.
In this study, researchers followed 113 adults with MCI. They gave each of them the usual basic treatment or the basic treatment plus ginkgo biloba. The group taking the ginkgo took the tablets three times daily for 12 months. And the researchers evaluated all of the participants at the beginning of the study, again at six months, and after the 12 months. To evaluate the patients, they used the mini-mental state examination and clock-drawing task, which helped them determine the dementia conversion rate.
At the beginning of the study, there was no difference in the groups. All of the patients were about equal in their evaluations. However, the scores began to increase significantly at six months in the group taking ginkgo. And, after 12 months, their scores were remarkably better than their original scores and the scores of the control group at the same time points.
According to the mini-mental state examination, the ginkgo group scored an average of 66.38% better than their original score. Compare that to an average of only 33.64% in the basic treatment group. On the clock-drawing task test, the ginkgo group averaged 61.21% better, compared to an average of 32.73% in the control group.
But the biggest difference came in the dementia conversion rates. This determines how many of the participants declined from MCI into full dementia. Amazingly, only 1.72% of the ginkgo group progressed to dementia by the six-month mark, compared to 9.09% of the control group. And, by the end of the study, only 5.17% of the ginkgo group progressed to dementia, while 14.55% of the control group declined. That's an increased risk of 181% in just 12 months for those who didn't take ginkgo!
Unfortunately, the study authors didn't say how much ginkgo they used in the study. However, the same group of researchers concluded a similar study a few months earlier. In that study, they used approximately 60 mg of ginkgo per day (19.2 mg, three times daily) and found similar positive results. So it's likely they used the same amount for this second study. This is a relatively small amount, so these results are truly fantastic.
