"Unequivocal evidence" that this nutrient reduces your cancer risk by 30%

It's rare in the medical world for researchers to draw a strong conclusion on anything. Any study you read almost always says something like "more research is needed." So I was stunned when I saw a study where the researchers said their study of a popular nutrient provides "unequivocal evidence" that it reduces your cancer risk.

What on earth could push a research team to make such a strong conclusion?

The researchers wanted to find out what type of cancer protection omega-3 fatty acids offer. So they genetically modified mice that both produced omega-3 fatty acids and developed aggressive breast cancer. Then they compared their rate of cancer to those mice that they engineered only to develop breast cancer. The result was very impressive.

The mice with higher omega-3 levels had a cancer risk that was 30% lower than those without the fatty acids. And the breast tumors the omega-3 group did develop were 33% smaller than those in the control group.

The researchers concluded that omega-3 fatty acids clearly inhibit the growth of breast cancer tumors by up to 30% – depending on how long you've been taking the fatty acids. The longer you take them, the better your protection.

One of the study authors said, "It's a significant finding. We show that lifelong exposure to omega-3s has a beneficial role in disease prevention – in this case, breast cancer prevention. What's important is that we have proven that omega-3s are the driving force and not something else."

I added the emphasis on "proven" because you'll rarely hear a researcher say something this concrete. They usually say something like "omega-3s might be a driving force...." They love to quantify their findings in case science proves them wrong. These researchers had no qualms about declaring this as a proven fact. That's powerful!
