Why is it that with all the pink ribbons and massive fund raisers for breast cancer, the only treatments conventional medicine can produce are more chemo, radiation, and surgery? You would think they would come up with something new and more effective. You would think they could come up with something like this amazing treatment from the ocean.
In the coastal waters off North Borneo in Southeast Asia, researchers have discovered a red seaweed that may hold the cure to breast cancer. This seaweed, Eucheuma cottoni, is rich in iodine, quercetin, catechin, rutin, carotenoids, and exotic antioxidants like phytopheophylin and phlorotannins.
These researchers, from the University Putra Malaysia, made a dry powder extract of the seaweed and tested its effects on rats with breast cancer. What they found will make chemo manufacturers very jealous.
First, the researchers injected rats with breast cancer cells and then divided them into three groups. One group didn't receive any treatment. They treated the second group with the most commonly used breast cancer chemo drug - tamoxifen. And they gave the third group the seaweed extract.
After four weeks, the rats taking the chemo drug had a 71% decrease in the size of their tumors. This is impressive. But these rats also suffered terrible side effects, including significant toxicity to their kidneys and livers. In fact, they had visible lesions on those organs. In other words, the chemo was saving them from the cancer - and slowly poisoning them at the same time. The cancer may not kill the rats, but the chemo would.
The rats taking the seaweed extract didn't see any of these side effects. There were no lesions on their kidneys or their livers. And their tumors shrank by an amazing 91%! In other words, the seaweed was 27% more powerful than the chemo - with absolutely zero negative side effects! That's astounding!
But there's more. The chemo and the seaweed extract both reduced MDA (malondialdehyde). MDA is a key marker of oxidative stress. MDA levels typically go up as your cancer grows. In this study, the chemo reduced MDA levels by 27%. But, again, the seaweed outperformed the drugs and reduced MDA levels by a whopping 46%.

And, if that weren't enough, the researchers found an incredible difference between the chemo drug's impact on glutathione levels compared to the seaweed. Glutathione, as you may know, is an important marker of antioxidant status. The higher your glutathione levels, the better your antioxidant status. The rats taking the chemo saw a 57% drop in their glutathione levels. But the rats taking the seaweed had an amazing 78% increase in their levels! That's unheard of in conventional cancer treatment.
The biggest problem with this study is that Eucheuma cottoni extract isn't widely available in the U.S. yet. I'm still looking for a reliable source. The good news, though, is that this isn't the only plant from the sea that fights breast cancer. The Chinese and Japanese use various seaweeds and algae to treat breast cancer, with amazing results. In fact, they include these as a regular part of their diet. Many think this is why Japanese women have 83% less breast cancer than women in the U.S.
One of the most widely studied is Seanol. Seanol contains many of the same polyphenols as Eucheuma cottoni. And several previous studies have found it fights many types of cancer, including breast cancer. But Seanol has one major advantage over Eucheuma cottoni - it's readily available. In fact, you can order it in the supplement Alginol. What's more, Alginol may help prevent cancer, so it's great to take daily whether you have cancer or just want to avoid it.
