If you suffer from an auto-immune disease, fatigue is probably one of your main symptoms. It's a persistent problem that can zap the life out of you and may keep you from having the energy and drive to fight the disease. So relieving fatigue could be your first step toward finding a solution. Now research shows that one common herb may relieve your fatigue.
In this new study, researchers wanted to find out if the herb ginseng would reduce the fatigue common in multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is a particularly difficult auto-immune disease. So finding relief from the fatigue it causes may provide hope for those suffering from other auto-immune diseases.
To find out if ginseng can relieve fatigue, the researchers conducted a double-blind, randomized pilot trial. They gave 50 participants either two placebo pills or two 250 mg tablets of ginseng for three months.
After the three months, the researchers found that those taking the ginseng experienced a reduction in their fatigue and an improvement in their overall quality of life. What's more, they didn't experience any adverse side effects.
This was a small trial, so the results aren't conclusive. But because the ginseng doesn't cause any negative side effects, it's definitely worth trying it to relieve any type of fatigue you may have. Whether you suffer from MS, chronic fatigue, or any other type of fatigue, ginseng may help reduce your fatigue and jumpstart your recovery.
Before you begin taking ginseng, though, there is one thing to consider. None of these participants were taking drugs that ginseng can interact with. So if you're taking pharmaceuticals, you'll want to talk to your doctor prior to starting it. In most cases, you'll be fine taking the herb with the supervision of your doctor.
