What if I told you there's a plant that could beat the Avian flu (H5N1) 99% of the time? And what if I told you it can do so with no side effects whatsoever? It might sound sensational, but it's very true.
Eight years ago, researchers in London conducted a study on the herb black elderberry. They wanted to know about elderberry for a couple of reasons. Folklore has it that people have used elderberry wine for influenza and chills caused by fever. In fact, legend says elderberry is the "medicine chest" of people living in the country. My family comes from the country, and my Aunt Belle swears by elderberry for treating the flu. She told me about its flu-fighting abilities long before this study came out.
But that's not the only reason the researchers from Retroscreen Virology, a leading British medical research institute associated to Queen Mary College, University of London, looked at elderberry. The other reason is that Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, a researcher from Israel, developed a product called Sambucol. Dr. Mumcuoglu has devoted much of her life to the study of elderberry. She has conducted multiple studies that found that this extract of elderberry is a proven remedy for regular flu.
Mumcuoglu first studied Sambucol during the Southern Israel flu epidemic of 1992 and 1993. She found that within 24 hours, 20% of her patients dramatically improved. Symptoms like fever, muscle aches and pains, and coughing all began to dissipate. Within 48 hours, an amazing 73% were better. And on the third day, 90% saw dramatic improvement. Among those who didn't take the extract, only 16% improved by the second day. It took almost everyone in the placebo group one week to feel any better.
A few years later, researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in Norway. They found that Sambucol significantly reduced the flu by four days. The researchers found that the black elderberry extract "stimulates the healthy immune system by increasing production of inflammatory cytokines."
But most of the studies conducted prior to 2005 were on common flu varieties and even swine flu. Then, in 2005, researchers looked at the ability of Sambucol to fight avian flu. Avian flu, as you may know, is one of the most virulent and deadly forms of the flu. The researchers in this study found that Sambucol was at least 99% effective against the avian flu virus. What's more, the extract also significantly neutralized the infectivity of the virus in cell cultures. So not only will it protect you, but it will protect those around you as well. With results like this, who needs a flu shot?
Sambucol is widely available at most health food stores, drugstores, and online. It comes in several different liquid anti-viral treatments. These include Sambucol Black Elderberry Extract, Sambucol Black Elderberry Syrup, Sambucol Immune System, and Sambucol for Kids. There's even an elixir specially made for diabetics.
