How to lower your risk of prostate cancer by at least 29%

Did you know that nearly 2.5 million American men have prostate cancer? What's amazing about that figure is that only about 30,000 of them will die from the disease each year. That's because prostate cancer is a slow-growing cancer. Most of these men will die of something else before the cancer can grow large enough to take their life. However, as you can see, some men do die of prostate cancer. Fortunately, there's one simple thing you can do to lower your risk of even getting this cancer.

A recent study found that men who eat higher amounts of "bad" fats are far more likey to get and then die from prostate cancer.

In this study, the researchers followed 4,577 men and had them fill out a food frequency questionnaire. They asked them specifically about 130 foods and beverages and how much they consumed them during the last year. They completed two of these questionnaires one year apart. Then they had them do two one-week diet records about six months apart. This would allow the researchers to see how accurate their questionnaires were. Finally, they asked these men every two years about their prostate health. They were looking to see if any had developed prostate cancer.

After the study, the researchers looked to see what types of fat the men consumed and how it related to their prostate cancer risk. They found that the more vegetable fat the men ate, the lower their risk of getting lethal prostate cancer. The men who ate the most "bad" fats (meaning fried and rancid oils and trans fats) had the highest risk for prostate cancer.

While avoiding the "bad" fats will reduce your risk, the researchers found something quite surprising. They discovered that replacing carbohydrates was one key to lowering your prostate cancer risk. That's surprising! Instead of avoiding bad fats, all you have to do is replace 10% of your calories from carbohydrates with "good" fats, and your risk of prostate cancer drops. Doing this one simple thing can lower your risk of the deadly form of prostate cancer by 29%.

What's more, when men with active prostate cancer replaced their carbs with vegetable fat, it lowered their risk of death by 26%. So this also is an easy way to fight existing cancer.

But that's not all. The men who actually stopped eating (or didn't eat) the "bad" fats and reduced their carb intake, had the best results. Replacing just 5% of their saturated fat intake with vegetable fat after their diagnosis decreased their risk of death by 34%.

So if you're looking for a great way to avoid prostate cancer - or live longer if you already have it - then start eating more vegetable fats. Also reduce the amount of "bad" fat (most "bad" fats are over-heated, rancid fats from frying food) and the amount of carbohydrates you eat. Olive oil, flaxseed oil, and other oil from veggies, nuts, and seeds are usually the best oils to use.
