If you're paying attention to the news, you've probably seen several stories about a resurgence in H1N1. This is a particular strain of the swine flu virus. One story had the scary headline, "The Swine Flu Is Back in California - And It's Starting to Kill Again." Actually, it's not just in California. It's sweeping the country.
Of course, the hysteria surrounding the outbreak has the CDC pushing a vaccine. And the way this bug mutates, there's no guarantee it will protect you. Plus, you probably know that it also can cause side effects. Fortunately, there are some great supplements available that can help you fight the infection before it takes hold.
The first supplement is resveratrol. Resveratrol, which comes from red grapes, has been in the news a lot lately. I've covered it several times in Nutrient Insider, as it's one of my favorite supplements. It's been the focus of a lot of studies due to its antioxidant power.
One of those studies came out in 2005 and showed that the supplement inhibits the influenza-A virus from replicating. The current strain of Swine Flu - H1N1 - is an influenza-A virus. So resveratrol should be able to fight this strain - and any of its mutations. You can buy resveratrol at many health food stores and on the Internet. One of my favorite brands is sold by Advanced Bionutritionals. You can order it by following this link.

The second nutrient that I've found particularly effective is vitamin D. But it's not just any form of vitamin D. The specific form that fights the flu is vitamin D3
. And many studies have found that vitamin D3 is extremely effective at fighting the flu. I know one person who was skeptical about D3's ability to fight the flu - until they were the only one in their office who didn't get the flu. Then they were convinced. D3 is one of the best flu preventives around.
The final supplement that can fight the flu is actually an inexpensive drug that you can buy at any grocery store, drugstore, pharmacy, or on the Internet. EpiCor is an all-natural yeast-based product that the cattle industry discovered. The manufacturers found that their patented multi-stage fermentation and drying process created a powerful immune system boost in cattle. That was over 50 years ago. More recently, they found a way to produce a product for human consumption. And it really works! All it takes is one 500 mg capsule a day.
This is by no means an exhaustive list of flu-fighting nutrients. You should also consider the old standards of vitamin C, vitamin A, and zinc. And don't forget that a healthy diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, and regular exercise is the best way to keep your immune system ready to fight the flu.
Remember, in 1918, when a similar influenza virus killed millions of people around the world, the virus first appeared in spring, when it was mild. It then reappeared in the fall of the same year and that's when it caused most of the damage. Begin to build your immune system today and you'll be in great shape to fight whatever flu bug hits.
