One of the biggest trends in healthcare is the startling rise in blindness. A recent study says that at this current rate, up to one billion people could be blind by 2050. That's one-tenth of the world's population. Fortunately, this epidemic is largely preventable.
The epidemic of blindness is developing out of the growing risk of myopia, or short-sightedness. Researchers at the Brien Holden Vision Institute say that half the world's population (nearly five billion people) will suffer from myopia by 2050. Myopia is largely a condition that develops when your eyes stay focused on up-close objects for extended periods of time. The widespread use of computers, tablets, and smartphones is the main cause of myopia. However, that's not all that's causing the problem.
The other major contributor to myopia is poor nutrition. Your eyes are part of your brain. Just like the rest of your brain, your eyes need a steady flow of nutrients to keep the cells healthy and functioning properly. When you combine poor eating habits with poor visual habits, the result can be serious eye problems and even blindness.

The researchers in this study said that reducing the progression of myopia by just 50% will prevent almost 90% of myopes reaching high levels of myopia. So prevention is absolutely vital. And prevention starts with good visual habits and better nutrition.
To avoid becoming one of those who will develop myopia and potential blindness, spend plenty of time outside. By looking at far off objects for a few hours a day, you can help your eyes focus and avoid short-sightedness. Plus, a little sunshine is good for your eyes. Just don't let it damage your eyes or your skin by burning. Next, try not to spend too much time on your computer or other devices. If you work on a computer, like I do, look up as often as you can.
