Why restless legs can lead to stroke, heart attacks, and kidney damage

When most of us think of restless leg syndrome, we think about a condition that causes our legs to move uncontrollably, mostly at night. The condition can keep you awake and make life difficult. But most people don't realize that there's much more to this condition than moving legs. It also can cause numbness, tingling, and shooting nerve pains in your legs.

A few years ago, researchers found that one of the causes of restless leg syndrome is a sensitivity to gluten. As you may know, gluten can cause changes in small intestinal bacteria. When this happens, it can lead to irritable bowel symptoms. It also can create defects in the barrier of your gut, which allows compounds to move through your intestines into your body where they shouldn't be. This was a "propensity matching" study, which is a very solid study. Here's how it works. The researchers found 3,700 veterans with a new restless leg syndrome diagnosis. Then they found another 3,700 veterans without the condition. Even though the second group didn't have restless leg syndrome, they did match to the first group on more than 20 demographic and clinical factors. In other words, the main difference between the two groups was the restless leg syndrome.

The research team then tracked the two groups for about eight years. After the eight years, they compared their outcomes. They were specifically looking for new cases of stroke, coronary heart disease, chronic kidney disease, or death from any cause.

They found a whopping fourfold higher incidence of stroke and heart disease in the restless leg syndrome group. They also found a threefold higher incidence of kidney disease. And they found that the group with restless leg syndrome was 88% more likely to die during the eight year period.
