Why High-Dose Vitamin C Kills Cancer Cells

Volume 7    |    Issue 13

I've showed you in the past how vitamin C can kill cancer cells. In fact, many of the doctors I know who treat cancer insist that vitamin C is a major part of their success. Unfortunately, conventional medicine hasn't been so excited about the results they see with vitamin C treatment. Some studies suggest the vitamin just doesn't do much to fight cancer. But now researchers at the University of Iowa believe that this is because doctors have used vitamin C in a way that guarantees failure.

Most studies that have looked at vitamin C as a cancer therapy involve taking the substance orally. However, the gut can't tolerate very much vitamin C. So the studies were limited in the amount of the vitamin they could use.

The doctors I work know who treat cancer will tell you that's simply not enough vitamin C to treat cancer. Sometimes you need up to 500 times the amount of C you can take orally to see success in treating cancer.

The solution. The UI scientists showed that giving vitamin C intravenously — and bypassing normal gut metabolism and excretion pathways — creates blood levels that are 100-500 times higher than levels seen with oral ingestion. This super-high concentration in the blood is what's crucial for vitamin C to attack cancer cells.

Before they looked at intravenous vitamin C, the researchers showed that extremely high levels of vitamin C selectively kills cancer cells but not normal cells in the test tube and in mice. Once the researchers started looking at humans, they found something incredible. By using high-dose vitamin C with standard chemotherapy and radiation, the researchers noticed the patients using the vitamin C had far better outcomes than those using just the chemo or radiation.

What was remarkable was that the vitamin C didn't hurt normal cells. It just attacked cancer cells. So the researchers wanted to find out why. What they discovered is what alternative doctors have known for years. Vitamin C breaks down in the blood very easily. When it does, it generates hydrogen peroxide. This reactive oxygen species can damage tissue and DNA. But normal cells are able to remove the damaging hydrogen peroxide, while cancer cells can't.

The authors of the study said, "In this paper we demonstrate that cancer cells are much less efficient in removing hydrogen peroxide than normal cells. Thus, cancer cells are much more prone to damage and death from a high amount of hydrogen peroxide. This explains how the very, very high levels of vitamin C used in our clinical trials do not affect normal tissue, but can be damaging to tumor tissue."

So if you have cancer, make sure your doctor is using high-dose intravenous vitamin C as part of your treatment. It could save your life.
