Could This Waste Product From Soy Stop the Damage From Poor Lifestyle Choices?

Every once in a while, we get to experience the discovery of a nutrient that completely revolutionizes the way we treat disease. Today, I’m going to tell you about one of these nutrients. This isn’t just a flash in the pan that seems to work well, but never really experiences its full potential. No, this nutrient has substantial research behind it. But the real question is what can it do for you today?

The answer to that question is astounding. Not only can this nutrient help reverse years of damage caused by poor lifestyle choices, it can help you avoid and treat heart disease, cancer, and type-2 diabetes.

Heart disease, cancer, and type-2 diabetes all have two things in common. The first is that they’re all non-communicable diseases. In other words, you can’t catch heart disease simply by being around someone who has had a heart attack. The same is true for cancer and type-2 diabetes. While some cases may have a bacterium or other bug involved in their development, these aren’t bugs that pass from one person to the next.

That’s because of the second thing these illnesses have in common. Almost every case is preventable. In other words, they typically develop because of lifestyle choices. Even when genetics are involved, our lifestyle choices can encourage the disease and even magnify our risk. Where bacteria and other bugs are involved, they usually develop because of the choices we make.

Heart attacks are a great example of this. Some researchers believe up to 90% of heart attacks are caused by a bacterium that develops in our gums. That number might be high, but it’s clear our dental hygiene has a major impact on our heart health. In fact, The Journal of Immunology Research found that people with moderate to advanced gum disease are 25-50% more likely to have heart disease than those with healthy gums. Of course, other lifestyle factors encourage heart disease as well. These include smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, and a diet high in sugar, processed, and fried foods.

The same is true for cancer. Genetic defects account for only 5-10% of all cancer cases. The remaining 90-95% of cancer cases are due to the environment we choose to live in and the lifestyle we choose to lead. Cigarette smoking, diet (fried and processed foods), excessive alcohol, sun exposure, environmental pollutants, infections, stress, obesity, and physical inactivity all play a massive role in the development of cancer.

And, of course, type-2 diabetes is entirely caused by lifestyle choices and is 100% preventable. In most cases, it’s completely reversible.

Even Genes Are Impacted by Lifestyle Choices

What most people don’t realize is that even our genes are impacted by the choices we make. For instance, you might have a genetic predisposition for a particular type of cancer. But if you never cause the genes involved in that predisposition to activate, then you wouldn’t have to worry about developing that cancer. This is why a family history for a disease is only one factor in developing a disease. If genes didn’t have to be activated, then a family history would be 100% causative. So what causes genes to activate?

This is a huge question that is now an entire field of study called epigenetics. This field of research looks at how our lifestyle choices impact our genes – and even the genes of our kids and grandkids. In other words, the decisions we make regarding food, smoking, exercise, and so many other factors don’t just impact our lives, but the lives of our descendants.

This relatively new field of study is already showing us some incredible insights. For example, given an ideal set of circumstances, someone with a genetic predisposition for a particular cancer would never develop that cancer. Of course, how many of us live in a truly idyllic world? None of us. So we have to figure out how to move as close as we can to that world, by eating healthy, getting regular exercise, and avoiding toxins (such as cigarette smoke, heavy metals, etc.) and injury.

There’s not one of us who can do all of these perfectly. So how do you help your body fix the damage caused by those times when we aren’t perfect? That’s where the new discovery of this amazing nutrient comes into play.

Medical World Is Turning to Peptides

In the coming months, you’re going to start hearing a lot about peptides. Peptides are naturally occurring biological molecules. Much like protein, they are made up of amino acids. As you may know, there are 20 naturally occurring amino acids. Just as you can combine different letters from the English alphabet to make words, you can take these 20 amino acids and combine them into a huge variety of different molecules. When a molecule consists of 2-50 amino acids, we call it a peptide. When you have a larger chain of more than 50 amino acids, we typically call it a protein.

The role of a peptide is determined by the combination of amino acids that make up its structure. Given the vast array of possible amino acid combinations, you can see how complex the world of peptides can be. Fortunately, we’re starting to unravel the complexity and find specific peptides that work for specific tasks.

One of these peptides came to light back in 1996 when Alfredo F. Galvez, PhD “serendipitously discovered” the lunasin peptide. This peptide is a component of soy protein and has 43 amino acids in its structure. What’s interesting about this peptide is that it’s often discarded in the waste streams of soy-processing plants. So it doesn’t always make it into our soy food products.

When I spoke to Dr. Galvez a few weeks ago, he told me there are other sources of lunasin, including wheat Solanum nigrum, rye, barley, amaranth seeds, triticale, and quinoa. But soy is by far the most abundant source of lunasin. Dr. Galvez also told me that lunasin is a “bioactive” peptide. That means it influences living things and their core elements, such as tissues and cells. This is important, because it shows how active the peptide is in influencing the health of your cells and tissues.

Powerful Anti-Cancer Nutrient

The primary focus of Dr. Galvez’s work has been on lunasin’s anti-tumor activity. But study after study shows that this peptide has the ability to prevent cancer and many other chronic diseases, including heart disease and diabetes. But just how effective is this peptide at fighting cancer?

Researchers have been looking at the ability of lunasin to fight cancer for a couple of decades now. So we have a large body of evidence that the peptide is vital for preventing and treating cancer. Dr. Galvez did much of the original research on lunasin’s anti-cancer activity. And most of his discoveries were centered on lunasin’s ability to kill cancer cells in a lab. But since then, other researchers have looked to expand on Dr. Galvez’s research.

One relatively recent study from 2017 looked at lunasin’s ability to fight the deadly skin cancer melanoma. The researchers found “The soy-derived peptide Lunasin inhibits invasive potential of melanoma initiating cells.” They went on to conclude: “Our studies suggest that Lunasin represents a unique anticancer agent that could be developed to help prevent metastasis and patient relapse by reducing the activity of CICs which are known to be resistant to current chemotherapies.”

Another study, this one conducted at the University of Illinois in 2009, found that lunasin has the ability to trigger the death of leukemia cells. The lunasin was so effective, the researchers were able to quantify the number of leukemia cells that were killed after treatment with lunasin in laboratory experiments. That’s significant.

Another study found that lunasin was able to inhibit cell proliferation and induced apoptosis (cell death) in human breast cancer cells.

In human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells, lunasin was able to reduce the expression of cyclin D1/D3, and down-regulate protein kinase Bα(PKBα) and activator protein 1 (AP-1), thereby inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis.

There are so many more studies on lunasin and cancer that I can’t cover even a significant portion of them here. It’s becoming very clear, though, that this peptide is a powerhouse anti-cancer nutrient. And a major reason it’s so effective is that it can reverse the damage done by poor lifestyle choices. I’ll have more on this next week. And I’ll also tell you about lunasin’s ability to fight heart disease, inflammation, lower cholesterol, and so much more.
