Last week, I showed you how a waste product from soybeans can dramatically increase your body’s ability to fight cancer. Many studies have shown that it can kill cancer cells in the prostate, breast, and the lungs.
What I didn’t have space to show you was how this nutrient also fights heart disease, lowers cholesterol and inflammation, and prevents type-2 diabetes. This means this peptide from soybeans can help reduce the damage done by eating an unhealthy diet.
There are some nutrients that are essential for living an optimal life. If you’re deficient in these nutrients, your body isn’t going to function as well as it could. There are other nutrients that we wouldn’t see as essential, simply because a lot of people never eat any of them and they do just fine. Other cultures around the world eat a lot of soy. China, Hong Kong, and Singapore consume large amounts of soy. And they have much lower rates of cancer than the U.S. They also have lower rates of obesity and heart disease. While some people in the medical community say soy isn’t good for your health, particularly if you have breast cancer, the evidence doesn’t support their claims. In fact, soy seems to be very good for you – and lunasin could be a major part of the reason.
A Powerful Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory
Most degenerative disorders, including cancer and heart disease, have two things in common: oxidative stress and inflammation. The two go hand-in-hand and cause significant damage to your tissues – leading to the degeneration. And lunasin has an amazing ability to keep both of these in check – even reversing the damage they cause in some studies.
One study looked at how lunasin inhibits the oxidation of linoleic acid. The researchers found that the peptide “reduces, in a significant dose-dependent manner, the production of reactive oxygen species.” And it also “inhibits the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha [TNF-alpha] and interleukine-6 [IL-6]).” In many of these studies, the researchers will say something like “this warrants further study to see if it will work in the treatment of cancer.” But in this case, the researchers didn’t mince words. They came out and said very clearly that lunasin should be used “not only as a cancer preventive and therapeutic agent but also as an agent against other inflammatory-related disorders.” This is about as strong of an endorsement as researchers ever give. But there’s more.
As you may know, oxidative stress caused by a poor diet is heavily implicated in many digestive disorders. This includes inflammatory bowel diseases and even colon cancer. Another study wanted to find out if lunasin’s antioxidant activity was potent enough to fight these bowel diseases. The researchers in this case found that lunasin has the ability to stop the oxidative stress damage and was able to “preserve the integrity of intestinal mucosa against oxidative damage-related diseases.”
Lunasin’s ability to reduce chronic inflammation was discovered by a team of researchers from the University of Illinois. In this study, the researchers “showed that lunasin blocked or reduced the activation of an important marker called NF-kappa-B, a link in the chain of biochemical events that cause inflammation. They also found statistically significant reductions in interleukin-1 and interleukin-6, both important players in the inflammatory process. The reduction in interleukin-6 was particularly strong.”
Again, the researchers made a bold statement in their conclusion: “We can see that daily consumption of lunasin-rich soy protein may help to reduce chronic inflammation.”
Since chronic inflammation is associated with many different illnesses, you can see why this nutrient is so important. It helps explain why the nutrient is so effective at preventing and fighting cancer, heart disease, bowel diseases, liver conditions (such as hepatitis), and many other ailments that are strongly associated with inflammation.
Reduces the Body’s Need for Cholesterol
One of the areas of study that gets me particularly excited about lunasin is its ability to reduce cholesterol levels. As I’ve told you in the past, cholesterol is a nutrient the body uses to fight many different health issues in the body. If your liver is producing a lot of cholesterol, it’s likely doing so because there’s a problem that requires the nutrient.
When you lower cholesterol naturally, you’re reducing the body’s burden to produce the nutrient. This is a good thing to do – and it will keep your cardiologist from recommending you take statins. And lunasin is the ideal nutrient to reduce your cholesterol levels.
Not only does it prevent LDL cholesterol from getting oxidized (the only dangerous cholesterol), but it also helps fix many of the same problems that cholesterol treats. So when you load your body up with lunasin, your liver doesn’t have to work so hard to produce cholesterol.

Dr. Alfredo Galvez, who discovered lunasin and showed me just how powerful it is, discovered that lunasin has the ability to inhibit gene expression of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG Co-A) reductase, which lowers cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver. There’s a lot more to what lunasin does in the liver to limit the production of cholesterol. But what I love about it is that it does so without hindering the production of CoQ10 (like statins), and it helps heal the damage that the liver was producing the cholesterol to treat. So it’s an all-around fantastic cholesterol-lowering nutrient that doesn’t force cholesterol lower without taking care of the entire body in the process.
Even Reduces Your Risk of Having a Heart Attack
Dr. Galvez was recently asked why lowering LDL cholesterol by inhibiting cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver is important for reducing the risk for heart disease. He answered: “Clinical trials have shown that not all cholesterol-lowering drugs can lower the risk for heart disease. Only statin drugs that lower cholesterol by inhibiting cholesterol biosynthesis have been shown to significantly reduce the risk for heart disease. Drugs like Zetia and the combination drug Vytorin that inhibit the absorption of cholesterol from the diet and the reabsorption of cholesterol through the bile were effective in lowering cholesterol but did not reduce the risk of heart disease. In fact, even increasing HDL (good) cholesterol did not reduce the risk for heart disease, contrary to common belief.”
So the mechanism that lunasin uses to lower cholesterol has a similar impact on heart health as statins that work in a similar way. However, there are differences. Lunasin works by reducing the expression of HMG-CoA reductase gene. But statins actually bind and inactivates the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme – effectively forcing your cholesterol levels lower rather than gently reducing them. The other difference is in the side effects. Statins increase your diabetes risk, and they can cause muscle weakness, loss of cognition, and fatty liver disease.
Lunasin, on the other hand, has an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect, increases your immunity, and promotes cellular health. All of which can reduce your heart attack risk and prevent diabetes.
One study in the journal Circulation found that lunasin reduces “LDL cholesterol by 8.6% and 6.4% after four and eight weeks of treatment, respectively. These results prove that lunasin is the active nutrient in soy protein responsible for LDL cholesterol lowering and its mechanism of action is by reducing cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver.” The study also confirmed the FDA’s health claim that lunasin reduces LDL cholesterol and cardiovascular risk.
