How to prevent and survive bypass surgery

Scott had a scare on Sunday. He went for a walk and almost died. As he was walking, he was completely out of breath; gasping for air on simple hills he had walked dozens of times without a problem. When he got home, he was coughing and couldn’t breathe. Even after resting, he still couldn’t breathe. Scott wasn’t having a heart attack, but he was close.

After spending the night in the hospital, the doctor inserted two stents into the coronary junction of his aorta (where the aorta splits into two branches). The junction was 80% blocked. Fortunately, Scott didn’t need bypass surgery, which is amazing. Those with a 70% blockage at this junction usually need bypass.

The good news is if he did require the surgery, it is now much safer than it was even 10 years ago. The mortality rate from surgery continues to drop thanks to improved techniques. But that doesn’t mean you want to experience it. It’s extremely painful and it can be deadly. In those under 70, like Scott, bypass surgery kills 4% of those who go through it. But that mortality rate goes up significantly if you’re over 70, especially if you’re a woman. And, if you do survive, it can increase your risk of dying in later years. In fact, you have only a 40% chance of living 20 years after undergoing the surgery.

The goal, then, is to avoid bypass surgery. But if you can’t, you want to make sure you survive it and live much, much longer afterward. Fortunately, one simple compound can help you do all this and much more. It is curcumin, the primary compound found in the spice turmeric.

A recent study from Thailand followed patients who had a heart bypass operation. A team of researchers from Chiang Mai University at the University Hospital studied 121 non-emergency bypass surgery patients. The researchers gave half of the participants a sugar pill four times daily. They gave the other half curcumin capsules. They started the treatment three days before the surgery and continued it until five days after the surgery.

According to the report in Reuters, “The group taking curcumin had a 65% lowered risk from post bypass operation heart attacks. That group also showed significantly lower levels of inflammation and oxidative stress markers in their blood. The findings were published in the American Journal of Cardiology.”

A 65% lower risk of having a heart attack after surgery is a huge difference. The doctors haven’t proved that one of their drugs can produce those kinds of results. And if curcumin can lower your risk that much after surgery, imagine how effective it is at preventing a heart attack in the first place.

So if you must have bypass surgery, or if you have heart disease (or want to avoid both), take curcumin every day. It could save your life. You can find curcumin in most health food stores. But there’s a more effective form than the typical curcumin. It’s Meriva, which is a highly absorbable form of turmeric (29 times more absorbable than regular turmeric). Meriva is the main ingredient in Reduloxin, an amazing formula that helps reduce inflammation throughout your body. It can help reduce the pain associated with arthritis, boost your memory, and protect your heart.

One last thought. You can avoid the clots that almost took Scott’s life. On Monday, I’ll show you how.
