Are you frustrated yet? Many Americans are. The New Year came around and their resolution was to lose weight. A lot of them decided to give the keto diet a try. You might be one of them.

If so, you’re a couple of weeks in now and you’ve probably lost a few pounds. But have you lost as many as you thought you would? If not, you might continue to be frustrated. Unless you take one simple step to supercharge your keto diet.

As you may know, the ketogenic diet (i.e., keto diet) involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. Reducing carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. Ketosis makes your body extremely efficient at burning fat for energy.

Ketosis is great for your liver, as it turns the fat in your liver into ketones. This, in turn, supplies energy to your brain. It also causes a massive reduction in blood sugar and insulin levels. So the health benefits are huge.

But sometimes just eating the right food isn’t enough. That’s because of one surprising truth: Losing weight isn’t as much about the food you eat as it is about what your body does with it.

You probably know that losing and maintaining your weight is all about your metabolism. If you optimize your metabolism, you’ll lose weight and keep it off. If your metabolism grows sluggish, you’ll gain weight.

Once your metabolism becomes sluggish, it’s hard to get it going again. But you can do it.

What Causes a Slow Metabolism?

Your metabolism is directly connected to how well your body handles insulin. Insulin, as you may know, is the hormone your body uses to regulate your blood sugar. When you’re young, your body uses insulin very effectively. This is why most kids and teenagers are thin. In recent years, this has started to change because kids are eating tons of sugar and carbs, which boosts their body’s production of insulin. The more insulin they produce, the faster their body becomes resistant to the insulin.

As we age, the overproduction of insulin begins to make your body resist the hormone – it becomes less effective. All of us are in some stage of insulin resistance. Some of us have very low levels of resistance – making it easier to stay thin. Many of us are at more advanced stages – making it harder to stay thin.

As your body becomes more and more resistant to insulin, glucose in your blood begins to take a toll on your metabolism. As your metabolism slows, you gain weight.

Keto diets work because they greatly reduce the amount of glucose in your blood without using insulin. This allows your metabolism to slowly speed up and, since there isn’t enough sugar to burn, it begins to burn fat. That’s when you lose weight.

When Keto Diets Don’t Work as Effectively

There are times when keto diets don’t have as fast of an effect as we would like. Researchers have been trying to figure out why this is the case. What’s causing the keto diet to be less effective?

The answer lies in your gut. Studies have shown that lean and overweight rodents and humans have significant differences in the composition of their intestinal flora (their gut bacteria). In the last 10-15 years, researchers have established a causal link between the intestinal microbiome and obesity/insulin resistance. What these researchers have found is that the type of food you eat can impact your insulin levels, but it’s not the only factor. What your digestive system does with that food is just as important.

Unfortunately, antibiotics have changed the makeup of just about everyone’s gut bacteria. Since they are indiscriminate killers, antibiotics kill good and bad bugs. So the massive increase in antibiotic prescriptions in the last 40 years has dramatically impacted our microbiomes. As a result, our gut doesn’t handle food the same way it used to, and it’s causing weight gain even in children.

We’ve counteracted this epidemic of antibiotic prescriptions with probiotics. While probiotics can definitely help, they are only part of the answer. Everyone should be taking a high quality probiotic every day. And they should be taking more than what’s suggested on the bottle (at least for a short period of time) if they have taken antibiotics recently. But, again, that’s only part of the solution.

The bugs in your gut need two things to thrive. They need food/nutrition. And they need an environment conducive to surviving and thriving. So when keto diets don’t work as effectively as they should, it’s usually because there’s a problem with the bugs in your gut. Either you don’t have enough of the “good guys,” there isn’t enough of the right nutrition feeding the good bugs, and/or the environment isn’t healthy.

3 Steps to Supercharge Your Keto Diet

So how can you maximize your keto diet? Here are three easy steps to take today to optimize your diet:

(1) Take a High-Quality Probiotic

It’s simple, but how many of us forget to take our probiotic every day? But it’s vital we remember. Studies have shown that the bacteria in your gut provides the benefits of an effective extra organ. Imagine functioning without your liver or kidneys. That’s essentially what happens when we kill off the bacteria in your gut without replenishing it. No, it won’t kill us as fast as removing a major organ. But it will kill us slowly if we don’t replenish it.

(2) Eat Plenty of Plants

Your gut bacteria need two specific types of nutrition – fiber and minerals. I’ve detailed both of these extensively in the past. Fiber, also known as prebiotics, are your gut bacteria’s favorite food. If you’re not eating enough fiber, your gut bacteria is starving. And your digestive tract isn’t working properly. Eating fiber supplies your microbiome with all the food it needs to survive. And it gives your bacteria ample amounts of minerals. Plants are a fantastic source of minerals.

Plants take minerals from the soil and convert them into a usable form for the human body. When we don’t eat enough plants, we're missing the fiber we need. But we’re also missing the minerals our cells need to communicate. If our cells aren’t communicating, it’s easy for our body to interpret certain foods as foreign invaders, rather than healthy nutrition. Adding the minerals back in fixes the communication issues with our gut cells and restores balance to our gut. This leads us to the final step in fixing your gut and supercharging your keto diet.

(3) Create an Environment for Bacteria to Thrive

The microbiome is critical for systemic health. It digests fibers, which creates short-chain fatty acids. The primary health benefits of short-chain fatty acids are their ability to provide your colon cells with energy. The main short-chain fatty acid you need in your colon is butyric acid, as it provides your colon cells with about 70% of their total energy needs. When you have sufficient butyric acid in your gut, it changes the pH of your gut and creates an environment that allows your probiotics to work even better.

This is where it gets exciting for keto dieters. Butyric acid fights obesity in a few different ways. First, it enhances your body’s fat-burning ability (and it does this even if you don’t strictly follow a ketogenic diet – but it works even faster if you do). Second, because it’s a major source of energy for your colon cells, it helps with digestion and calorie usage. It also helps protect you against colon cells becoming abnormal and turning into tumors. Third, it mediates the hormones in your gut, so you can stay thin without cutting back on calories. And fourth, it increases the synthesis of leptin, which reduces appetite. So, even though you don't need to eat fewer calories to lose weight with keto, butyric acid helps you eat less, allowing you to drop the pounds even faster.

What I love about butyric acid is that it will help you lose weight faster on the keto diet, but it’s not a weight-loss supplement. It’s a nutrient that, like minerals, helps keep your cells healthy and communicating effectively. This makes everything you’re doing with your diet more effective. It makes your probiotics work better. And it does one more thing: it actually helps your body create ketones in your blood. Here’s why that’s important.

As you’re going through your day, your blood sugar levels fluctuate. When your levels drop, you want to eat. If you go into hypoglycemia, very low blood sugar, you’ll tend to binge eat. But when you’re eating butyric acid, the blood ketones it creates can serve as a secondary energy source. It effectively pinch-hits for cells to provide ATP energy, and you don’t feel hungry. You don’t have cravings for carbs.

You can buy butyric acid in supplement form, but there is one problem with most of the products on the market. They can cause abdominal discomfort and gas, especially when you first start taking them. And if you take too much, it can actually disrupt the gut barrier. However, one very savvy researcher has found a way to get all the benefits of butyric acid without any of the abdominal problems.

Scientist Franco Cavaleri has developed a proprietary and patented form of butyric acid called Ketoba. The actual patented name is KETOBHBA(TM), which gets its name from “ketobhb” for the ketone beta-hydroxybutyrate and “ba” from butyric acid. Cavaleri told me that Ketoba “actually supplies the exogenous ketone body (βHB) that supports ketosis; coupled to the short chain fatty acid (BA) induces ketogenesis.” Simply put, that means he essentially activated a ketone using butyric acid and the combination causes your body to burn fat. And this combination doesn’t cause the same gastrointestinal distress that other butyric acid products and even medium-chain triglycerides cause. Having the extra butyric acid in your gut supports an environment that voids pathogens and nurtures friendly gut bacteria.

Cavaleri said he designed Ketoba “to induce ketogenesis to get the body to generate ketones from endogenous fat sources; to help you utilize serum fat as an energy source.” In other words, it forces your body to burn fat by increasing cellular energy. The result is that it really boosts your body’s energy levels. Dr. Cavaleri warns: “Do not use if mental and body energy are not desired.” So don’t take it before you go to bed or you might be up really late.
