Last week, I showed you how barberry can work wonders in fighting pain. I also mentioned at the end that barberry has shown a lot of promise in fighting cancer. Well, a new study shows that an herb mixture of barberry and nine other herbs causes prostate cancer cells to commit suicide.
As you may know, most cells have a certain lifespan. At the end of their natural lifespan, they naturally die. If the cells become diseased prior to that natural end, the cell will normally commit suicide. Scientists call this cell suicide apoptosis.
Cancer cells lose this ability to commit suicide. So they grow in an unnatural diseased state indefinitely. So finding a way to cause apoptosis in cancer cells could cause the entire tumor to die off.
In this study, the researchers looked at a blend of herbs (brand name Zyflamend) that contained barberry, holy basil, turmeric, ginger, green tea, rosemary, hu zhang, Chinese goldthread, oregano, and Scutellaria biacalensis. As I mentioned last week, barberry and some of these herbs have anti-inflammatory effects. And their anti-inflammatory effects played a major role in killing cancer cells.

The researchers in this study are from Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center's department of holistic urology. They said that prostate cancer cells make the substance COX-2. You may remember that COX-2 is an enzyme that’s responsible for inflammation and pain. You’ve probably heard about it in relation to arthritis and other pain problems. But it’s very important with regard to cancer. Many studies have found that COX-2 actually causes cancer-cell growth.
If COX-2 causes cancer to grow, then it would make sense that COX-2 inhibitors like aspirin and ibuprofen also help slow cancer growth. And studies show that these drugs will, in fact, slow cancer growth. But they come at a price, namely bleeding in your gut, ulcers, liver problems, and many other health problems.
But the herbs used in this study didn’t cause any of these problems. And they worked as well as the drugs, if not better, at causing cancer-cell apoptosis. The researchers found that the herbs slowed the rate of tumor growth and more than doubled the rate of apoptosis. This is about the rate at which the most powerful COX-2 inhibitor drugs cause apoptosis.
The researchers in this study said they haven’t proven that these herbs will cure cancer, but do recommend their use in cancer treatment and prevention. We already know that inflammation can cause a number of health problems, so I have to agree with their recommendation. By controlling inflammation, you could prevent cancer.
Many of these herbs are available in Reduloxin, which is a powerful anti-inflammatory formula. Remember, the turmeric included in this formula is 29 times more absorbable than the ordinary turmeric you’ll find in most formulas in the health food store and online. And we know turmeric is a powerful cancer fighter. Using this inexpensive supplement can reduce inflammation and significantly reduce your risk for a host of health problems, including cancer.
