Brain booster: Add this to coffee

Imagine drinking 3 cups of espresso and not feeling jittery or anxious. Your mind is clear. Your focus is razor sharp. And you feel wide awake but calm.

That’s exactly what happens when you add a brain-enhancing nutrient to your morning coffee.

You get double the benefits of the caffeine without any of the negative effects. In fact, you’ll feel calmer and steadier.

The secret is to take your morning coffee with the amino acid l-theanine.

If you’re well read, you probably know that theanine is found in green tea.  It’s the reason that green tea is stimulating and relaxing at the same time.

Well, recently a group of researchers decided to find out if adding theanine to coffee and other caffeinated drinks would provide the same positive effects.

The researchers divided the participants into two groups. They gave both groups 50 mgs of caffeine. And they gave one group 100 mgs of L-theanine. They then analyzed the participants’ cognition and mood using tests like word recognition, visual processing, and attention switching.

After 60 minutes, the participants taking caffeine with theanine  saw improved speed and accuracy in the attention-switching task compared to the placebo. They were also less easily distracted.

Other studies have shown that L-theanine alone doesn’t improve cognitive function and task completion. But adding it to caffeine dramatically improves both.

In other words, combining L-theanine with caffeine has potent effects. It helps you reduce the amount of caffeine you need to get the same effects, as it makes each cup of coffee more powerful. Or it lets you drink even more coffee without the negative effects.

No more jitters, anxiety, or mood swings. And some people say it even prevents caffeine headaches and blood pressure spikes.

You can find liquid L-theanine online and in many health food stores. You can also take an L-theanine capsule when you drink your coffee.

For best results, use twice as much L-theanine as caffeine. So if your coffee has 100 mg of caffeine (the usual amount in an 8 oz cup), use 200 mg of L-theanine. L-theanine doesn’t have any known side effects.
