While eating unhealthy food, combined with a lack of exercise, is still the number one cause of diabetes, new research says the air you breathe can cause the disease too.
And the air doesn’t have to be particularly dirty to have this effect.
In fact, researchers have "found an increased risk even at low levels of air pollution currently considered safe by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO)."
Here’s why the air you breathe can contribute to diabetes. Air pollution contains airborne microscopic pieces of dust, dirt, smoke, soot, and liquid droplets. It even has microscopic pieces of metal, as one study found that brake pads from cars send small pieces of metal into the air every time we put on the brakes to stop our car.

When we breathe, these particles go into our lungs and then invade the bloodstream. That’s where the problem starts. When these toxins enter our bloodstream, they can cause major health conditions, including heart disease, stroke, cancer, and kidney disease. And now we can add diabetes to this list. The reason? The researchers believe pollution reduces insulin production and triggers inflammation, preventing the body from converting blood glucose into energy.
The researchers believe pollution contributed to 3.2 million new diabetes cases around the world in 2016. That’s about 14% of all new diabetes cases from that year. That would mean pollution causes about 150,000 new cases of diabetes every year in the U.S.
So what can you do? You can’t stop breathing, obviously. So you need to be vigilant about removing the particles from your body. The best way to do that is with a binding agent like modified citrus pectin. This agent will bind with the particles and remove them from your body. Studies have shown that PectaSol, which contains modified citrus pectin, is highly effective at doing just that. It’s the best way to remove toxins without also removing healthy minerals, such as magnesium and potassium.
