Reduce skin-cancer recurrence by 57% with two common nutrients

The two most common skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. These cancers are rarely life-threatening. But if you’ve ever had one of these, you’re at a significantly higher risk of developing melanoma. And melanoma can be life-threatening. Fortunately, there’s an inexpensive nutrient combination that can reduce your risk of melanoma by over 50%. Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine looked at data from the Women’s Health Initiative. This massive study followed 36,282 postmenopausal women. These women took either a placebo or a combination of vitamin D (400 IU) and calcium (1,000 mg) every day for seven years.

Powerful prostate supplement also protects women’s bones

Powerful prostate supplement also protects women’s bones Last week, I told you about two nutrients that help shrink a swollen prostate. Well, there’s another nutrient that’s great for your prostate. I told you about this nutrient back in March in a Nutrient Insider on lowering your cholesterol. And now there’s new evidence that women need to take plenty. That’s because it also improves bone health as well. This multifaceted nutrient is lycopene. Lycopene is a bright red plant chemical. You can find it in red fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, watermelon, and papaya. Unfortunately, it’s not in strawberries or cherries. But the greatest source of lycopene, believe it or not, is ketchup. That’s because cooking tomatoes activates the chemical. So ketchup, as well as salsa and tomato sauce, is full of lycopene.

Two nutrients reduce a swollen prostate better than drugs

If you have an enlarged prostate, your doctor will tell you to take any of the alpha-blocker drugs that are on the market. If you read Consumer Reports, they will tell you to take doxazosin, as “it has a long track record of being both safe and effective.” While the doxazosin may be “safe and effective” compared to most alpha-blockers, it still comes with a full list of side effects. These can include chest pain, irregular heartbeat, prolonged and painful erections, and vision changes. Wouldn’t it be great to find a proven treatment for enlarged prostate without all the side effects? Well, two new studies say there is such a treatment.

The overlooked link between cancer and digestive problems

Cancer kills more people every year than any other cause except heart disease. Digestive problems among Americans are escalating fast, sales for antacids and other digestive drugs are well over $10 billion annually. Is there a connection? What if I told you the connection may be a simple enzyme that comes from pineapple? And what if I told you this enzyme can make your tummy feel better and fight cancer at the same time? Interested? Well, new research says the enzyme bromelain can do just that.

Blueberries deliver yet another powerful health benefit

During this time of year, we love to pick blueberries. We’re fortunate to have a blueberry farm about five minutes from our house. Each July, we try to pick bucketfuls of blueberries. It’s a great time for the family — and a very healthy venture for our bones. You probably already know that blueberries pack a punch for healthy eyes and your general health. But what do they have to do with healthy bones? Well, a new study says plenty. Back in 2010, the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research published a study showing that blueberries improved the bone development of lab rats. Now, this same team has found the same exciting effects on humans.
